Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry provides safe, comfortable dental treatment for patients with special needs. Sometimes called relaxation dentistry, sedation dentistry is a method of managing pain and anxiety during professional dental care through the use of medication. Sedation dentistry is beneficial for those patients who have high fear of dental care, complex dental problems, fear of needles and shots, trouble getting numb, or sensitive teeth.

There are two common choices for sedation:

  • Oral Conscious Sedation: Through this type of sedation you will experience very deep relaxation while still being conscious. Your doctor will provide you with an oral medication that is easy to swallow, safe, and low cost. When the medication takes effect, you will be able to speak and respond to external requests.

When you arrive at our office, you will be promptly greeted and brought to one of our treatment rooms where you will be made comfortable with restful music and the care of our gentle staff.

After you become relaxed, Dr. Rogers will complete your dental treatment.  When your procedure is finished, you will be brought home by a friend or relative.  You will feel refreshed and relaxed and with little or no memory of your dental treatment.

  • Inhalation Sedation: This is the most popular form of sedation used in dentistry today. Inhalation sedation uses Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen (laughing gas) to help your body achieve a relaxed state.

Sedation really works.  Relaxation is achieved throughout your entire visit with or no memory of sights, sounds and smells.

Complicated dental procedures are done quickly and  easily, all in one visit.   Also, dental sedation helps to reduce your fatigue during and after dental appointments.

If you have difficulty numbing, you will find sedation dentistry to be a painless, easy and safe alternative.

What does it feel like to be sedated?

With sedation dentistry, also known as conscious sedation, you are actually awake during your treatment.  You feel relaxed and removed from your surroundings, while maintaining the ability to respond to questions.

How safe is Sedation Dentistry?

With any kind of treatment there are risks.  However, sedation dentistry, if performed properly under the care of , specially trained staff, is extremely safe.  As a precaution, our office features a reversing agent, which counteracts the effects of the sedation within minutes.  Thus we are able to return you to consciousness at any time.

What are the effects of sedation after my treatment?

Some patients will feel tired immediately following their treatment.  The most common after effect however, is little or no memory of your treatment.

One frequently asked question is, “Can I visit your office for sedation dentistry while maintaining a relationship with my regular dentist?”

The answer is absolutely!  We would be glad to meet with you and determine whether or not you are a candidate for sedation dentistry.
